Bangladesh's quest to win their maiden T20I series in New Zealand will have to wait until Sunday. The second T20I in Mount Maunganui on Friday (December 29) was abandoned after only 11 overs due to rain.

Sending New Zealand in to bat, Bangladesh tasted early success when Shoriful Islam got rid of Finn Allen once again, this time getting him caught at cover. But what followed was a counterattack from Tim Siefert, who hit 6 fours and a six en route to his 23-ball 43. It took a slower ball from Tanzim Hasan Sakib to end his innings in the eighth over.

The match was well poised when the rains first arrived at 8:00pm local time, with NZ at 72/2 after 11 overs. The cut-off time for a 5-over game was 10:28pm but the rains never relented and the umpires had to call off the game at 9:55pm.

The teams will now meet at the same venue on New Year's Eve for the third and final T20I, that will also mark the end of Bangladesh tour of New Zealand.
