Cook however agreed that Warner's reprieve was not the reason for England's loss. England's abysmal Test performances saw them surrender the Ashes by a 5-0 margin and despite an improved batting performance at the MCG on Sunday, the target of 270 was easily overhauled by the Australians in the first ODI. "We are struggling to find the answers for a lot of these questions," Cook told BBC Radio 5 live.

"All I know is that if we keep working hard it does eventually turn. We have got to keep believing in ourselves to keep doing that and keep backing ourselves, otherwise we certainly won't win games of cricket."

England now play an Australian Prime Minister's XI side on Tuesday at the Manuka Oval in Canberra before the ODI series resumes with the second match at Brisbane on the 17th of January.
