February 14th, 2003: Vaas hat-trick blows Bangladesh away

Bangladesh had got their Test status in 2000, so the 2003 World Cup was their first as a full member nation. They had a disastrous to their campaign as associate member Canada beat them in their opening game. Their next opponents Sri Lanka added more salt to the wounds by thrashing them by 10 wickets at Pietermaritzburg. Chaminda Vaas was the chief wrecker as he became the first bowler to claim a hat-trick with the first three balls of a game.

Jayasuriya won the toss and asked an inexperienced Bangladesh to bat first against the likes of Vaas and Muralitharan. Vaas picked up a hat-trick and added another before the first over ended. His victims - Hannan Sarkar, Mohammad Ashraful, Ehsanul Haque and Sanwar Hussain. Alok Kapali and Khalid Mashud's cameos gave some respectability to the total before Mashrafe Mortaza's 23 got them over the 100-mark. Vaas ended with a 6-fer while Muralitharan had three of his own.

A chase of 125 was never going to trouble Sri Lanka and they hardly broke a sweat. Openers Jayasuriya and Marvan Atapattu saw them through without losing a wicket. Both batsmen got to their respective fifties with Atapattu outscoring his more dominant partner.

March 21st, 2007: Jayasuriya spoils the fun for Bangladesh

Bangladesh were on a high as they had just beaten a formidable Indian side quite convincingly in their first match of the 2007 World Cup. They came into the next game versus Sri Lanka with a lot of confidence and it took Jayasuriya 87 balls to destroy that as he went on to score 109. Bangladesh could not recover from that as they went on to lose by 198 runs.

All Sri Lankan batsmen got starts and there were partnerships right through the innings. With Jayasuriya going berserk at one end, the others had to just support him and Mahela Jayawardene and Co. did just that. Kumar Sangakkara and Chamara Silva got fifties, while Jayawardene scored 46 and even Tharanga's 98-run stand with Jayasuriya proved handy as Sri Lanka finished with 318/4.

Bangladesh's top order was blown away by Malinga accompanied by Vaas. Nothing went right for them as they were reduced to 5 for 41, a small rain break made it even more difficult as DLS revised the target to 311 in 46 overs. Only three batsmen got to double digits and Ashraful was one of them, he remained unbeaten on 45 as the rest of the batsmen fell in a procession.

February 26th, 2015: Dilshan, Sangakkara tons give comprehensive win

Sri Lanka needed an authoritative performance to gain momentum in the 2015 World Cup. They had lost to New Zealand in the opener and had scrapped their way through against Afghanistan. So, when Bangladesh came along, senior batsmen Dilshan and Sangakkara put on a show for the MCG crowd with a 210-run partnership which saw both of them scoring hundreds.

Angelo Mathews ensured his batsmen made first use of the a batsmen friendly surface. Thirimanne and Dilshan gave Sri Lanka a 122-run opening stand and it just set the tone for the rest of the innings.

Sangakkara joined Dilshan and kept the scoreboard ticking with boundaries at crucial times. The latter went on to record his highest ODI score while Sangakkara registered his first century of the edition.

Chasing 332, Bangladesh lost Tamim Iqbal to the second ball of the innings and lost a couple more before the 10-over mark. Shakib and Rahim steadied the ship with a 64-run association and Sabbir Rahman also scored a fifty, but it was all too late as Sri Lanka rolled them over for 240. Malinga and Lakmal shared 5 wickets, while Dilshan also chipped in with a couple.

11 June 2019: Rain plays spoilsport, match abandoned

Quite a few games were washed out due to rain in the second week of 2019 World Cup. This was Sri Lanka's second consecutive game of World Cup 2019 that got washed out due to rain. The weather gods looked grim on Sri Lanka once again. If their contest against Pakistan was a rain-affected one, the rain was even heavier this time around. The venue was the same, so was the weather and the eventual result turned out to be the same. The match was abandoned due to rain and both the teams shared a point each.
